How to help veterans in need

Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries.

Veteran

Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways.

• Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity.

• Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans.

• Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost.

• Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locally-based Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.

Northland Christian Student Chosen for World Debate Team

The Northland Christian debate team is incredibly proud to announce that Sarah Lanier, a senior, has been chosen to represent the United States as a member of the USA Debate Team. Sarah will travel the world competing as a representative of Team USA (and Northland Christian School). The team is made up of eight other students from across the nation that will compete in global debate competitions against students from other countries. Some competitions they will attend this upcoming school year will be held in Germany, Croatia, Singapore and Argentina; the final tournament of the year will be held in Bali, Indonesia.

In order to be selected, the participants had to complete several video speeches on different debate topics. The field started with over 500 applicants. Once the field was narrowed down to the final 20, Sarah participated in an interview that consisted of questions and impromptu speaking exercises. Margaret Purcell, a senior debate captain, also made it to the semi-final round! We could not be more proud of how these ladies have represented our program and our school!

Northland Christian has had one other student that was selected to be a member of Team USA—Shania Hunt, class of 2014. With Sarah being selected to the team, Northland Christian becomes one of only a select few schools that has ever had two students on the team. Since 1974, Northland Christian School has prepared Christian leaders for college, life and forever, for ages 18 months through 12th grade. Northland offers a traditional college preparatory curriculum and comprehensive co-curricular programs. The beautiful campus is located in northwest Houston with over 680 students currently enrolled.

Help Support Local Police Officers

WACO - Until recently there haven't been many good choices to clean and maintain a firearm. That is until now, right here in Waco, hey can you guys help me?

They can with one of their six locations Nation wide and with eight more opening this year as well, this is a business that is thriving due to ex Military members using their skills to fill a real void.

"This is the only business we know of that can take a guy who has gun use, gun knowledge and can share that with the public. And it lets them become the expert again, and it's great to see these guys thrive."

Like franchiser Roman Carreon who served six years in the military and is now using his expertise on both gun safety and maintenance which led him to owning his own store.

"Weapons was something that I was very good at in the military something that a lot of military guys get trained in, firearms safety, cleaning and it just fit the bill...."

The Gun Cleaners hope to have 100 stores Nationwide by the end of 2018. And they are constantly thinking of ways to support our men and women in Blue. So for just 30 dollars you can pre pay a gun cleaning for an officer. They sold 40 cleanings in the first 48 hours.

"We have a store in Dallas and of course when the 5 officers were killed in July it just spurned us to say what can we do not just gun cleaners corporate members, which is 2500, what can we do to support our police officers and we came up with the pay it forward program.....

So officers take advantage and come on in and you'll get your firearm cleaned and most of the time you'll get your gun back the day that you turned it in. And you can even text the person who paid thanking them for their generosity.
